About Australia

The largest island in the world, Australia is home to prehistoric landscapes, unusual wildlife and a vibrant lifestyle. Its beauty and scale, with vast stretches of deep red desert, rolling mountain ranges, rainforests and thousands of miles of untouched sandy coastline, make it a unique and unforgettable destination.

Australia has a wide range of environments and climates, from tropical conditions in the north to cool and temperate weather in the south. The vast interior is mostly desert or dry grassland, with relatively few settlements. Most Australians live along the fertile east coast between Brisbane and Melbourne. Because the country is so vast, planning is essential to experience its many attractions.

Visit Queensland to explore the unforgettable coral formations of the Great Barrier Reef, or enjoy the vibrant outdoor lifestyle of Sydney. From Melbourne, take one of the world's great road trips along the Great Ocean Road, a spectacular coastal highway in Victoria. Visit the Northern Territory to experience the beauty of Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or explore Kings Canyon.

Discover the west coast, with its remote coastline and the isolated capital city of Perth. Away from the cities, tour the vineyards of South Australia's Barossa Valley, Western Australia's Margaret River region and Victoria's Yarra Valley. Across the water, Tasmania's quiet rural towns feature convict-era Georgian architecture. The island is also home to national parks such as Cradle Mountain, where visitors can bushwalk through scenic gorges.

Climate

The northern third of Australia lies in the tropics and is generally warm or hot throughout the year. The rest of the country lies south of the tropics and experiences warm summers and mild or cool winters. During winter, some southern areas experience occasional frosts. However, the Australian Alps and the interior of Tasmania are the main areas where temperatures can remain below freezing for more than a day or so at a time.
