About Australia

The largest island in the world, Australia is home to prehistoric landscapes, unique wildlife, and a vibrant lifestyle. Its remarkable beauty and scale, with vast stretches of red desert, rolling mountain ranges, rainforests, and thousands of miles of coastline, make it a unique and unforgettable destination.

Australia has diverse environments and climates, ranging from tropical conditions in the north to cool and temperate weather in the south. The vast interior is mostly desert or dry grassland with relatively few settlements. Most Australians live along the fertile east coast, between Brisbane and Melbourne.

Visit Queensland to experience the spectacular Great Barrier Reef, or enjoy Sydney's vibrant outdoor lifestyle. Take a road trip along the Great Ocean Road, which stretches along the Victorian coast into South Australia. In the Northern Territory, explore the iconic Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park or discover the dramatic landscapes of Kings Canyon.

Australia's west coast offers a beautiful, rugged coastline and the isolated capital city of Perth. Away from the major cities, explore the vineyards of South Australia's Barossa Valley, Western Australia's Margaret River, and Victoria's Yarra Valley. Across the water, Tasmania's quiet rural towns feature historic Georgian architecture. National parks such as Cradle Mountain offer spectacular gorges and bushwalking trails.

Climate

The northern third of Australia lies in the tropics and remains warm or hot throughout the year. The rest of the country lies south of the tropics and generally experiences warm summers and mild or cool winters. In winter, some southern areas experience occasional frost. The Australian Alps and the interior of Tasmania are the main regions where temperatures can remain below freezing for more than a day or so at a time.
